THE HARVEST

The harvest begins at the end of September, traditionally on Saint Wenceslas day, 28 September, for the early-ripening grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau and Blauer Portugieser. It continues throughout October until the beginning of November when the late ripening Riesling grapes are picked. The grapes are hand-harvested and placed into fruit boxes. White-grape varieties are picked in the morning at lower temperatures, whilst the black cultivars for the production of red wine are harvested during the warmer afternoons.
