CLIMATE

Average annual rainfall in the Mělník region is 550 mm. Despite favourable microclimatic conditions, winters on the slopes rising from the river banks can be very harsh with temperatures known to have fallen as low as -25°C, which represents threat to the vines. Such low temperatures may occur once in a decade. The worse the climatic conditions for vine cultivation the greater the effort and care required for working in the vineyards if one is to be rewarded by ripe-fruit harvests especially in good vintages (eg 1992, 1999 and 2000). The quality of the vintage is largely dependent on the amount and timing of rainfall, especially in autumn.
