GEOLOGY
The viticultural area of Mělník lies mostly on a calcareous and
argillite bedrock covered with an alluvial sandy topsoil with chalky
limestone, slate and clay. During the Tertiary period the current
landscape was formed by volcanic activity (e.g. Chloumek Hill) and
erosion. The vineyards soil composition is of a light consistency,
warming readily and providing ideal conditions for the cultivation
of black grape varieties.
